Theme: Counselling Youth with Gambling Addiction Issues

Speakers: Rev Sam Kuna

Statistics have shown that there is a need to reach out actively to young Singaporeans who are at risk developing addictive gambling habits (Guan, 2010). More often, these youths are in self-denial about their gambling problem until their addiction compromises their personal, family and career pursuits.

In this talk, Sam will discuss:

Key issues about addictions and their risk factors
Treatments and its limits
The need for early intervention
The use of preventive measures to minimize potential problems

The outcomes of the talk would be:

To identify the characteristics and behaviors of gambling addiction
To learn practical techniques to use and
To understand treatment implications

About the Speaker

Rev Sam Kuna is an Ordained Minister with the Assemblies of God Singapore. He studied Psychology (BA) and Marriage and Family Therapy (MA) and is currently the Dean of the School of Counseling, TCA College. Sam has served as Director of Teen Challenge (1984-1992; 1998-2009) and Care Community Society (1996-1998). He was the External Assessor & Clinical Supervisor at UNiSIM in 2009 and is currently the clinical supervisor at ECTA, CCSS and Teen Challenge. He is also an adjunct lecturer with ECTA, Promises Pte Ltd and OASIS Family Life Education Centre and is the Senior Training Consultant with Pastoral Care Network.

Sam has been involved in various conferences, namely the Youth Learning Conference (2004) as Presenter on Juvenile Delinquency; Counselling & Care 40th Anniversary Conference 2006 - Youth Addictions; Methodist Welfare Services (2007) - TRAC Conference - Parenting & Youth; TCC Life! Conference in 2009 - Parenting Children & Youth Workshops; TCA College Conference 2009 - Catching Up with Youth; Asia Pacific Behavioral & Addiction Medicine Conference in 2010 as Presenter/Advisory Committee (including 2 previous Conferences under a different name); International Substance Abuse & Addiction Coalition Conference(2010) as Presenter/Organising Committee Member. He has also authored an article "About Juvenile Delinquency" in Hedges (30th Anniversary) Publication of Care Corner, Singapore.
