Theme: Understanding and Counselling Clients with Borderline and AntiSocial Personality Disorders

Care professionls often report that their caseloads would include individuals with various personality disorders. These clients can be challenging when their diagnoses are known; counselling them when their disorders go undetected is even more challenging and frustrating.

In this talk, Dr Lim will use a clinical approach to:
• Explain the DSM-IV-TR diagnoses of these two personality disorders
• Discuss the definition of personality disorder
• Identify the common life histories and roles that are connected with the development of these personality disorders
• Discuss treatments and its limits
• Discuss the role of the counselor’s professional response to such clients
The outcomes of the talk would be:
• To identify the characteristics and behaviors of these personality disorders
• To learn practical techniques to use when counseling such clients
• To identify and address ‘manipulative’ behaviors
• To understand the treatment implications for counseling these clients

About the Speaker
Dr Lim Yun Chin is currently the Consultant Psychiatrist and Head of Raffles Hospital's Counselling Department and is active in prisons and drug rehabilitation psychiatric work in Singapore. He is also a visiting psychiatrist to the Community Addictions Management Programme (CAMP) of the Institute of Medical Health (IMH). With 30 years of psychiatric practice behind him, Dr Lim also lectures on Addiction for the Graduate Diploma in Psychotherapy course at the Graduate School of Medical Studies, National University of Singapore. Dr Lim has authored a chapter on opiate abuse in the book entitled "Drug Abuse in Singapore" as well as a chapter on the drug abuse in the Textbook on Psychiatry for Doctors and Medical Students. He also pioneered the establishment of the Alcohol Treatment Unit in Woodbridge Hospital.
