Theme: Disturbances of Mood: The Many Faces of Mood Disorder

In the field of mental health, mood disorders are among the most common psychological disorders. Also known as affective disorders, they are a group of illness where their primary symptom is a disturbance in mood that is unusual for the circumstances. Counselling clients with mood disorders can be particularly challenging especially with certain populations such as children, adolescents and substance abusers of all ages as there are multiple symptoms that have to be addressed. In this talk, Dr Sim will: -Cover the different types of mood disorder such as depression, bipolar disorder -Discuss the clinical features of these conditions -Elaborate on some causative factors and treatment considerations -Discuss some case vignettes to further aid our understanding of these conditions
The outcomes of the talk would be: -To identify the features and types of mood disorders -Understand some aetiological factors -Understand treatment objectives and options
About the Speaker: Dr Sim Kang (MBBS (Melb), M.Med (Psychiatry), Grad. Diploma Psychotheraphy (Distinction), FAMS) is currently a senior consultant psychiatrist at the Institute of Mental Health. He is the Deputy Chief of the Department of General Psychiatry and the Deputy Director of the Department of Research at the same hospital. He is also an adjunct A/Professor with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. Apart from his busy clinical duties, his researcg interests lie in psychotic spectrum disorders such as schizophrena and bipolar disorder. He is a recipient of several clinical and research awards including the NHG NUHS Doctor Award, NHG Annual Scientific Congress 2009, and Singapore Clinician-Investigator Award, 1st Singapore Biomedical Healthcare Congress 2010. He has over 70 publications and served as a reviewer for various international peer reviewed journals.
